After stepping in our restaurant, you will quickly notice the big wooden shelves on the wall besides the counter. Those shelves are really special to us as we used rare pieces of old wood to build them. But please, look closer! You will immediately notice the big jars full of different kind of herbs that are kindly sharing their colors, shapes and beauty ...

These herbs are really important for us and we are always finding new ways to play with them : using wild thyme to spice our receipes, mixing cinnamon in our sweet cookies, sweetening our summer cold teas with liccorice or even burning sage to call good energies !

But actually the most precious thing about these herbs is surely that they can treat your body. Most of us, in Datli Maya, are already interested into and aware of the power of plants in terms of natural medicine... that's why we choose to give you the opportunity to taste them and play with them : you can do you own tea & medicinal teas in our dining room - following if needed the advises written on the board we pined next to the Tea Corner. More than 15 herbs are there, waiting for you such as St John's Worth, pomegranate flowers, mallow flowers, ginger, lavender : to strenghten your immune system, to give your energy and hope, to relax you or to help you fighting a cough...

To make sure the herbs are of really good quality and completely natural, we get most of them from the small local markets where we are used to pace in the Kazdaglari Mountains region (between Edremit and Bayramiç).

But for some of them, especially wild thyme, sage, camomile and wild mint, we choose to pick them up ourselves in the wildest areas of the mountains - thanks to the help of our wise local friends who know almost everything about them. For this reason, we spent a full day (until the rain started) to pick up these different kind of medicinal herbs when we went to the mountains last week. We climbed up through the trees of a dense forest to reach a rocky and sunny spot where the wild mint was cuddled by the strong wind, then we searched next to the huge fir trees to discover wild thyme before stopping in a glade full of high herbs and camomila to fill up some more white cotton bags.

After this excursion we just had to make them dry to ensure they would be preserved during the ride to Istanbul so we let them for several days opened to dry with the pure mountain wind.

Now, you can just stop by Datli to get a chance to taste these herbs according to your needs or envy! Before we write another post more detailed about the different benefits of each plants we have around, you can ask some of us for some advises! Some drinks are also already made-ready to drink : the so-called tamarine syrup receipe (see previous post), our cold summer tea (sage, mint, liccorice & much more...) or the small tea jars that are shown on our counter and which are meant to strengthen your immune system...

Have a healthy day!
